On this Feast of Holy Innocents, this goes out to all the “little ones”

This goes out to all the “little ones” – all the people who live on the underside of exploitative and oppressive power.

This goes out to all the poor, those who are too often forgotten and overlooked in a culture hyperventilating on consumerism and acquisitiveness, but who have the highest regard of the Kingdom of Heaven.

This goes out to the all those who exist outside of what society deems as normative gender performance, expression, and identity, struggling to be true to themselves and honor the blessed image of God in them.

This goes out to all Muslims, and atheists, and Jews, and agnostics and all those who some see as damned merely because you profess a creed of compassion without using the name “Jesus,” but who are committed to living a life filled with light, and joy, and grace.

This goes out to all the people of color who exist in a world choking on the dying fumes of racism and white supremacy, but whose vibrant cultures and languages weave a beautiful tapestry of God’s wonderful creation.

This goes out to all women who wake up each day in a world that talks over and for you, looks around you, and objectifies you, failing to honor the sacred nature of your being, but who shatter ceilings by scaling rough staircases.

This goes out to all queer people, people whose love is forbidden, and despised, and hated, but who daily reveal that “love is love is love is love is love is love is love…”

This goes out to all refugees and immigrants whose lives are lived on an epic journey in search of safety and a home that seems so elusive.

This goes out to all who struggle with mental illness or addiction in a culture obsessed with wellness even at the expense of truth.

This goes out to all the forgotten. All the ignored. All the overlooked. All the abused. All the neglected. All the shamed. All the exploited. All dispossessed. All the lost. All the lonely. All the martyred. This goes out to all those who warrant the tears of Heaven for the pain and suffering you endure at the hands of your fellow human beings. This goes out to you.

This goes out to all the “little ones,” the ones Jesus said very clearly that he would move heaven and earth to find and bring home, and to rejoice at your homecoming.[1]

This goes out to all the “little ones” – all the people who live on the underside of exploitative and oppressive power. This goes out to all those whose very existence upsets the powerful and threatens the mighty. This goes out to you and this is to let you know that exploitative and oppressive power does not win, the loving and compassionate Reign of God does. If the Bible is clear about anything, it is not that you are condemned, or hated, or wicked. It is that you are loved utterly, and that it is God’s job to “frustrate the designs” of those who overlook, dishonor, and dehumanize you.

Beloved, this goes out to you.
